about

In December of 2020, with the UK in the grip of full Covid lockdown and the effects of isolation taking their toll, I was sorely missing collaboration and interaction with other artists. I posted an idea on Twitter, inspired by the old parlour game, ‘Consequences’. But, rather than collaborating on a narrative, or a picture, we would remotely create music together. I called for collaborators amongst my Twitter followers. Some of whom I knew personally, and some I only knew through social media, but hope to meet eventually when normality returns.

The premise: I would create a set of sounds from a variety of sources. Acoustic instruments such as autoharp, modified music box, piezo noise boxes, processed through a palette of DIY effects that I have designed and built. These sounds would act as a seed to inspire each artist. I encouraged each collaborator to initially work quickly, spending as little as an hour on their first submission, to allow ideas to flourish without being stifled by over consideration. They would then send these back to me, and we would iterate until we agreed the work was complete.

Each collaborative process ended up being completely different. Some of the initial tracks bear a strong resemblance to the final versions, and I merely added a little of my own flavour to them, other artists sent more nascent ideas and experiments, which I then transformed into a more complete piece which we worked on together. The process that each artist used differed greatly, from manipulating the audio live using a glove controller and a Microbit to control a Pure Data patch, to using trackers, to repurposing old cassettes found in charity shops. I had initial concerns that because each artist received the same material that the various pieces might end up sharing too many similarities, in fact the opposite was true, each piece is starkly different, but because they share the same DNA they have evolved into pieces which remain coherent as a whole. The photos were taken as I was constructing the initial sample set that started this process. I hope you get as much out of listening to these as we did creating them.

about

Cutlasses Brighton, UK

These compositions combine field recordings from various sites around the British Isles, which are heavily manipulated using my handmade DIY electronic controllers and effects, accompanied by live guitar drones and melodies. Taking cues from the world of sound art but always trying to apply pop sensibilities, the result is lush and cinematic soundscapes topped with delicate melody. ... more
